The Bigger the Hair…
Your Step by Step Guide to using Velcro Rollers!
I have to say that my number one Question I always get asked is: How do you do your hair like that. And I have to give all the credit to Velcro Rollers. They are on my List of top 10 Items I don’t ever want to live without. If one day, the Walkers start coming, you’ll see my butt out there slaying, figuratively and literally, with a velcro roller in my mohawk. Priorities, right?
But here is the Step by Step Guide on how I put them in and take them out:
Spray all of your hair with a Heat Protectant, we don’t want to do any damage! My favorites that I like to use Davines, Living Proof, or DryBar’s.
Section out “MoHawk” of your hair and start there. From there section that out, I like to take front section “the Snooki area” first.
Curl with a One Inch or Greater Barrel, away from your face. We can’t cover up that Beautiful face!
Release Curl and Immediately grab a Roller. I like to use either a Medium or Large Size for my mohawk and sides of my face.
Wrap hair around roller of your choosing. Don’t twist curl when wrapping, make sure you’re wrapping in the same motion that the curl is already going… does that make sense?
If your hair is thinner or if you do smaller sections, you won’t necessarily need a clip, but I like to clip them all to keep them secure.
Continue to Curl and Roll the rest of the top of your head. (This usually takes me about three rollers)
Next section your sides. I personally just lazily separate them, the less precise you are with your sectioning, the more natural and effortless it’ll look.
Next you’re going to Section one side ( I always start with my left side) into three sections vertically. Hold on to the Back section and throw the other hair over top, or you can hold it in your mouth. I usually do the latter.
With the Side sections I like to go through and alternate (or just randomly) curl them either under or over. Think Toilet Paper Roll. After curling, immediately put on a roller. On the Sides/back I only use Small and Medium sized rollers.
For the section on each side that is right beside the face, I like to curl that hair vertically so that the volume goes out vs up or down. And I use a Large Roller for those two sections.
Once you get your hair curled and Rollers put in, I like to wait until they are completely cooled. So usually about 10-15 minutes. Remember: Your hair is already curled, this is just setting those curls and volume.
Once Cooled, I like to spray a lite spritz of HairSpray, I’m currently using R+Co’s, but that’s only because it was sent to me in PR and I’m too lazy to pick up more. But in my mind, Hairspray is Hairspray.
Then gradually take your rollers out. I like to start with the bottom one first, just so they don’t get tangled and I’m not fighting the volume.
When the bottom section is unrolled, Spray with a Texture Spray. Currently I’m using ColorWow’s, and I like it, but use it sparingly!
Do the same technique (release and spray) with the top section of your hair.
Now its time to mess and fluff, move your hair around in a way that you think to looks right. If you need more texture spray, this is your moment. If you feel like your curls look too “perfect” use a wide tooth comb to separate them.
And Viola! You have the perfect Volume Hairstyle thanks to your Velcro Rollers!
